From vision to build: designing Narrative’s full AI experience for compliance in 4 months
Compliance can be a complicated and time-consuming process that takes a lot of research. The Narrative set out to make this easier by automating key tasks so compliance teams could focus on their main goal - their company. They needed help updating old compliance methods with modern tools to make processes smoother. One big challenge was training AI to read different documents from various sources and spot potential compliance issues. This also meant designing a user interface that made it simple for teams to review and apply the AI’s findings to their existing documents.
Goal
Launch a market-ready AI-powered compliance solution within 4 months to enhance efficiency, reduce manual workload, and position the company as an innovator in compliance automation.
My responsibilities
Led end-to-end design in close collaboration with the founders by conducting research, building a scalable design system, and designing features to support daily compliance workflows while exploring how AI could enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Process
01. Collaboration with Founders
Worked closely with the founders to map out key workflows, ensuring alignment on the overall vision and understanding of the product's goals.
02. Future-First Approach
Took a "future-first" approach, considering the full potential of AI to explore all possibilities before refining and narrowing the scope to focus on practical, incremental implementation.
03. Feature Planning
Defined and fleshed out the majority of features upfront, providing a clear roadmap for the product and allowing the engineering team to start with simple designs and build iteratively.
04. User Research:
Conducted desk research and user interviews with compliance teams to gain insights into their pain points and workflow challenges.
05. Design
Used the gathered insights to ensure the product was designed to streamline and improve compliance teams' workflows, focusing on their specific needs and challenges.
Impact
I left this project ahead of development ending, and do not have exact data to inform success, however, I can with confidence say that I have achieved the following:
Streamlined compliance workflows by designing intuitive, AI-powered tools that automated document review, issue detection, and project management.
Improved team efficiency and onboarding by simplifying complex processes and reducing manual tasks, enabling faster ramp-up for new users.
Delivered dev-ready designs with a scalable design system, enabling engineering to begin implementation with clarity and speed.
